Orphans exist in the sitemap or via external links but sit outside the site's internal link graph. Crawlers find them reluctantly and rank them barely - authority has no road in.
Why it matters
Every content investment stranded as an orphan is wasted twice: created but never connected. Internal linking audits recover them for free.
