When the same page is reachable through multiple URLs, the canonical tag nominates the master copy so authority consolidates instead of splitting. Self-referencing canonicals are default hygiene; cross-domain canonicals are a statement of ownership.
Why it matters
Parameterized URLs, filters and print versions silently create duplicates at scale - canonical discipline prevents the dilution that stalls otherwise healthy sites.
